Yamaha Venture Motorcycle Questions

Motorcycle Starts with choke, but cannot idle, nor rev up with throttle being used, just cuts out?

Its a Yamaha Venture Royale 1990 with the issue. Its happened twice before, but didn't think much of it, as it just kicked back in.

Pull the "choke"--its a enrichment choke really--and you can start the Bike. Close choke, and the bike dies. Close choke, and pull back the throttle, dies faster. Pull the throttle when the bike is using choke, bike dies. Using any throttle kills the engine. Now the bike itself? Just got ridden for a bit and been only parked for a few minutes. Whats wrong?
In response to first answer: The choke can be left on, but due to the design of the choke itself, it's tricky to figure out "Partially" even then, still can't get to 5 MPH if the throttle kicks in. Though I have not tried, kickstand up, and doing this with clutch in, choke on, and in first gear.
And yes, the tank is got a good fuel, and the petcock is set to RES.

It is a fuel starvation problem. Can you close the choke partially, after the engine starts? Is the fuel on/off valve fully open. Lots of good quality fuel in the tank?

what should I look for when buying a used bike?

My price limit is only $3000. I see a lot of older bikes for sale, like
Yamaha and Honda from the 1980s. The bikes say they have low
miles and run perfect, but not being familiar with bike maintenance
nor having a garage to work in, I shy away from the older bikes.
For example, there is a 1983 Yamaha Venture Royale 1200cc with new carbs that says it runs great and only has 17K on it. He wants $2800 for it. What do you think of that? There is also a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600cc for $3200. It has 37K on it. Is 37K a lot for a motorcycle? I am good at buying used cars, but clueless about buying a bike. I am looking for a bike to commute to work, and explore the city streets. I always choose Best Answer. Thanks for your time.

I love the antique bikes, but a bike that has been sitting up will almost always require work. Cleaning the gas tank, lines and carb, replacing many rubber parts that become brittle over the years. Some parts are hard or almost impossible to find.

If you are not mechanically inclined, Id go for the newer one. 37k is not a lot for a bike, and 3200 is a good price for that bike in my area.

Look for what color smoke the bike has when started cold. None is best, white is acceptable for 2-3 minutes.
Look underneath for any evidence of an oil leak, how many owners the bike has had, any scrapes or scratches in strange areas that indicate the bike has been wrecked and someone isnt telling.
See if the the gasket is intact around the case, has not yet been apart for internal repair.

Private sellers are often reluctant to allow test rides, but listening to the motor (smooth?), starting off (smooth?) brakes (squealing?) shifting (easily?) can be seen watching the seller ride. Some sellers will allow test rides with the understanding - if you wreck it, you bought it.

Some dealers will allow test rides on their bikes, some dealers have more used bikes than others. At least you can go sit on a bunch to see what fits you.
